Instead of the Discovery Health portal I was taken to a yet another Acai Diet offer. Some Betty's fake diet blog. WTF!?
You're not supposed to be able to do this in Google. The display and destination url have to match these days.
If you're using a tracking link, that's fine.
But the destination of the tracking link has to match the display url. No wiggle rooom. That's the rules.
Well Betty found out a simple way to get around the little destination = display rule and in the process was literally STEALING the reputation of the Discovery Channel portal. And the thing is, it would be just as easy to do this with CNN.com, NewYorkTimes.com, ABCNews.com, or even Oprah.com.
But I would NOT recommend doing this with Oprah. She'd come after your ass and nail it to a wall. The rest of them... maybe.
So what's going on here? How is Betty able to get away with hijacking the Discovery Health web domain? The answer is actually simple: referrer cloaking.

You never hear about referrer cloaking. Internet marketers are always talking about "link cloaking" for affiliate links and you'll hear black hats and the like talk about cloaking and IP-delivery but almost NOBODY talks about referrer cloaking.
Which is a shame, because it is so damn effective.
Here's the thing...
Link cloaking is nothing. It's valuable, needed, and important to the affiliate marketer but there is nothing really special about it.
Instead of some affiliate link like http://MYAFFID.crush.hop.clickbank.net that looks a little wonky you can replace that with a nice looking url
like http://mysite.com/recommends/crush-secrets.
Regular cloaking is a cluster bomb. You take every stinking page on a domain - all the traffic, all the visitors - and you send them to an offer. So the search engines see your pretty blog or website and all the human visitors see your offer. Usually an affiliate offer.

There's nothing pretty about cloaking. Generate 10,000 plus keywords, build a shit load of websites with those keywords and cloak them to promote your offer. Simple and deadly effective (if you can recognize the difference between a spider and a human... don't laugh, most can't). Now, there are some technical mumbo-jumbo differences between cloaking and redirecting and exactly how you identify a spider but none of that is important.
What matters here is that cloaking is a broad brush. Take ALL THIS TRAFFIC and send it over here (to your offer). That's it.
