How Harlan Pissed Off John Carlton

Here’s an email I got from Harlan Kilstein this morning. There’s so much going on here it’s probably worth it’s own report but I wanted to share this with you right away since you may not be on Harlan’s list.

Well, if you’re not – fix that.

Head over to http://SixFigureCopy.com and subscribe.

While you’re at it, follow @drkilstein on Twitter. Harlan always has some fun and direct things to say.

I’ve just returned from John Carlton’s hot seat seminar where I served on his expert panel.

While I was there, John made an off hand comment about how I’ve changed the copywriting profession.

You see, years ago, the only people who demanded (and got) the top fees were the people at the top of the game.

But I dramatically shortened the curve.

And my students routinely start pulling in 5 figure jobs within a few months of working with me.

Are they working any harder? No.

Are they writing more jobs? No.

They’re just…

Using my system.

Now later this week, I’m going to share a video. We’re filming it on Thursday.

This video is going to show you what the day in a life of a 7 figure copywriter is like.

I suggest you watch it and think about whether you want to continue trolling in the Warrior Forum for clients or move into the big time.

And, within the next 2 weeks, I’m going to rock the copywriting world with a special announcement.

I’m going to find copywriting jobs for…

EVERYONE.

Stick around.

Peace.

Harlan Kilstein

This email works on so many levels

  • great subject / headline – “How I Pissed Off John Carlton”
  • credibility – Harlan was an “expert” at a Carlton hot seat
  • implicit endorsement (Harland “changed the copywriting profession”)
  • bonding (“you can do this too”)
  • tease – later this week he’s got a video

NONE of this is complicated. It’s simple. Very direct. And flat out works.

I can’t tell you how many emails I see that are cut/paste articles or have no personality or hook in them at all. It’s really frustrating to see otherwise good marketers screw up like this.

If you’re smart you’d copy this email and make it your own. Use the same short, choppy, and direct style. Try and “borrow” someone else’s authority if you’re not the #1 dude (dudette ?!) in your field.  Tease the reader with a report or video and make a minilaunch out of it. The “product” doesn’t have to be a big deal – the process of taking your list through actions is the winner here.

Hi love it. Short sentences… to the point… paragraphs are no more than one sentence long (2 works as well… but no more). Brilliant.

God knows why I’m not on Harlan’s list. Best I fix dat quick.
